What is Color Coated Stainless Steel?
Color-coated stainless steel is a decorative finished stainless steel product that combines a genuine stainless substrate with a colored, textured, or visually enhanced surface. Depending on the required appearance and application, the finish may be achieved through methods such as PVD coloring, electro-coloring, or selected organic coating systems, applied to stainless surfaces with 2B, brushed, hairline, or mirror finishes.
The key distinction is the substrate. Unlike prepainted carbon steel, which relies on a carbon steel base with an organic surface coating, color-coated stainless steel is built on real stainless steel and retains the underlying corrosion resistance and hygiene advantages of the selected grade. This allows buyers to specify both decorative appearance and stainless performance in the same material.
It is commonly used for elevator interiors, appliance panels, architectural wall cladding, decorative trim, premium signage, and other visible applications where finish quality and corrosion resistance both matter. Supplied as a prefinished coil or sheet, it reduces the need for secondary surface finishing before fabrication.
Color Coated Stainless vs Standard Stainless vs Prepainted Carbon Steel
All three deliver a finished metal surface. The difference lies in the base metal, corrosion performance, and the look you can achieve.
| Factor | Color Coated Stainless | Standard Stainless | Prepainted Carbon (PPGI / PPCR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Substrate | Stainless steel (304, 316, 430) | Stainless steel (304, 316, 430) | Galvanized or cold-rolled carbon steel |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent | Excellent | Standard to low |
| Surface look | Color, brushed, mirror, textured | Silver-grey mill finish | Painted color |
| Color options | Wide — PVD, electro-color, organic | None (natural tone only) | Wide — organic paint |
| Durability of finish | Very high, scratch and fade resistant | High (bare metal) | Moderate |
| Best environment | Humid, high-touch, premium interior | General industrial and hygienic | Dry indoor to general use |
| Cost level | Premium | Mid to premium | Economical |
| Typical use | Elevators, appliances, architecture | Kitchens, tanks, industrial | Panels, roofing, enclosures |
- Choose color coated stainless when you need real corrosion resistance and a decorative finish in one material. Step down to standard stainless when the natural tone is fine, or to prepainted carbon steel when the environment is dry and cost matters more than durability.
Why Buyers Source Color Coated Stainless Steel from Everesteel
Real Stainless Performance With a Designed Finish
You don't have to trade durability for looks. The base is genuine 304, 316, or 430 stainless, so the panel keeps its full corrosion resistance, strength, and hygiene rating even in humid or high-touch settings. On top of that, we apply color, brushed, or mirror finishes that hold up to daily wear. For elevators, appliances, and architecture, that combination lets you specify one material instead of compromising on either quality or appearance.
Consistent Color and Finish, Batch After Batch
Color coated stainless lives or dies on consistency — a gold panel that drifts to bronze across an installation is a rejected order. Because we finish on our own PVD and coating lines, we control the color and gloss on every coil against approved reference standards. That means your first sheet and your ten-thousandth sheet match, so large architectural runs and repeat appliance orders stay visually uniform.
A Ready-to-Fabricate Surface With No Finishing Step
Every coil leaves our line finished — colored, textured, and protected — so there's no polishing booth, coating line, or secondary treatment at your factory. You slit, cut, form, and assemble straight into finished parts. That removes a full process stage and the rework that comes with in-house finishing, speeding up your throughput while protecting the surface quality.
Custom Colors and Textures, Produced In-House
Standard shades — gold, black, bronze, blue, rose, and champagne — are held as references, and we develop custom colors and textures to your project palette directly on our lines. Brushed, mirror, hairline, and anti-fingerprint effects are produced on the same equipment. You receive a production sample for approval before mass production, with one supplier accountable for the match.

Highly reflective stainless surfaces for feature walls, display fixtures, signage, and premium decorative applications. Super mirror options are used where a brighter, more polished visual effect is required.

PVD Gold
Gold-toned stainless steel with rich color, strong visual impact, and excellent durability. Frequently specified for hotel interiors, elevator doors, column covers, and luxury fit-out details.

Wood Patterns
Decorative wood-look finishes that combine the appearance of timber with the durability, cleanability, and dimensional stability of stainless steel. Suitable for feature panels, decorative cladding, and high-end interior applications.
Processing Capabilities
Downstream processing is available in-house, so your color-coated stainless can arrive in the format your production line actually needs — not just as a master coil.
Slitting
Coils are slit to custom widths from 20 mm and above, with tight tolerances and clean edges suited to panel forming, appliance part production, and profile lines.
Cut-to-Length
Sheet blanks cut to your dimensions with flatness and squareness tolerances suitable for direct press, forming, or panel fabrication. Protective film stays on through cutting to guard the finish.
Embossing
Structural or decorative emboss patterns applied in-line, including linen, stucco, rigid, and custom profiles. Embossing adds rigidity to thin gauges and creates distinctive architectural textures.
Lamination
Protective PVC or PE film applied over the finished surface for transit protection and scratch resistance, keeping the color and texture flawless through shipping and fabrication.
Custom Color Matching
Submit a physical sample, RAL code, or Pantone reference, and our technical team develops a matched finish — with a production sample provided for approval before the full run begins.

FAQs
Q1. What is the difference between color coated stainless steel and prepainted carbon steel?
Prepainted carbon steel (PPGI or PPCR) uses a carbon steel base with an organic paint layer, which limits its corrosion resistance. Color coated stainless steel uses a genuine stainless substrate, so it keeps full corrosion resistance and strength while adding color or texture on top. Choose color coated stainless when durability and hygiene matter; choose prepainted carbon steel when cost is the priority and the environment is dry.
Q2. Will the color fade or scratch over time?
No, not under normal use. PVD-coated stainless is highly resistant to fading, corrosion, and scratching, which is why it’s used in elevators and high-traffic interiors. Organic color coatings are also durable but better suited to lower-wear applications. We salt-spray and adhesion test selected batches to confirm the finish holds up.
Q3. Which stainless grades can be color coated?
We commonly color coat 304, 316, 316L, 430, and 201. Grade 304 suits most decorative and appliance work, 316 and 316L are chosen for medical and coastal environments where extra corrosion resistance is needed, and 430 is a more economical option for dry interior use.
Q4. What coloring methods do you offer?
We offer PVD coating for durable, rich metallic colors and textures, electro-coloring for grades used in hygienic settings, and organic color coating for cost-sensitive decorative work. We’ll recommend the right method based on your color, finish, and application.
Q5. What is your minimum order quantity for color coated stainless steel?
Our standard minimum order quantity is 5 tons per specification. For custom colors or non-standard finishes, we recommend 5–10 tons to cover setup and color development costs. Contact us to discuss your project volume.
Q6. What is the typical lead time?
Standard lead time is 15–25 days from order confirmation and deposit receipt. Custom colors or new finish development may add 7–10 days for sample approval. Expedited scheduling may be available depending on production capacity at the time of order.
Q7. Can you supply custom colors and provide samples before bulk production?
Yes. Submit a physical sample, RAL code, or Pantone reference, and we develop a matched finish for review. Once you approve the color and specification in writing, we schedule mass production. Sample production typically takes 5–10 working days.
Q8. Can color coated stainless be supplied as cut sheet rather than coil?
Yes. We operate slitting and cut-to-length lines on-site and supply color coated stainless as master coil, slit coil, or cut-to-length sheet to your specified dimensions. Protective film stays on through processing, and sheets are interleaved and packaged for export.
