What Is Chalkboard Steel?
Chalkboard steel, also called blackboard steel, is a prefinished steel product with a specialized matte writing surface engineered for repeated use with chalk. The coating is formulated to provide controlled micro-texture, low reflectance, and surface durability so that traditional chalk can leave clear marks and be erased cleanly under normal classroom, hospitality, and display use.
For standard chalkboard applications, the surface is typically supplied with a super-matte finish to minimize glare and improve writing visibility. Semi-matte variants are also available for decorative or lighter-duty board products where a slightly smoother visual appearance is preferred.
Because the substrate is steel, the finished board surface is magnetic, eliminating the need for a separate magnetic backing in most standard board constructions. The reverse side carries an epoxy back coating designed to support lamination to common board cores, such as MDF, honeycomb, and cardboard. The product is supplied in coil or cut-to-length sheet form for chalkboard manufacturers and related board fabricators.

Why Buyers Source Chalkboard Steel from Everesteel
Consistent Surface Quality Across Batches
One of the most common concerns when sourcing chalk-surface steel is batch-to-batch variation in matte level, chalk receptivity, and coating adhesion. Everesteel controls the full production process in-house, from substrate preparation through matte resin application and curing. Gloss level, surface hardness, and coating micro-texture are monitored per batch, which makes repeat orders straightforward to standardize across production runs.
Full Custom Specification Support
Everesteel does not operate on a catalog-only basis. If your application calls for a specific thickness, a non-standard coil width, a custom RAL color reference, or a modified gloss level within the matte range, the technical team reviews the requirement with you before production begins. Color matching is confirmed against customer-supplied references or RAL codes prior to production commencement.
In-House Processing and Accessories Supply
Slitting, cut-to-length processing, tension leveling, and protective film application are all carried out at our Jiangyin facility. Everesteel can also supply accessories within the same order — including aluminum frames, ABS corners, adhesive suitable for common board lamination, and aluminum pen trays. Consolidating accessories into a single shipment reduces logistics complexity and lead time for chalkboard manufacturers.
Direct Export Supply
Everesteel supplies Chalkboard Steel to buyers across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Export orders are packed in seaworthy packaging suitable for ocean freight, and documentation is prepared to support customs clearance in the destination market.

Surface and Pattern Options

Matte Black — RAL 9005 (Jet Black)
The standard configuration for traditional chalkboards. A Super Matte (2–5% GU) surface on a galvanized steel substrate, cured to ≥5H hardness. The near-zero gloss level eliminates surface reflectance, providing maximum writing contrast for chalk and liquid chalk markers. Widely specified for school classroom boards, café menu boards, and retail signage panels.

Matte Green — RAL 6005 (Deep Green)
The standard color for school green boards across educational markets globally. The deep green matte surface meets visual ergonomic requirements for classroom environments and supports the same chalk receptivity and erase performance as the black variant. Rated for heavy-use daily chalk writing cycles.

Anthracite Grey — RAL 7021
A contemporary dark grey option suited to office decor boards, hospitality signage, and architectural interior board panels. The anthracite finish provides a refined aesthetic while retaining full chalk-surface functionality. Available in Super Matte or Semi-Matte gloss levels depending on the intended application.

Custom Color
For buyers requiring colors outside the three standard RAL references — including custom brand colors or project-specific RAL codes — Everesteel supports custom color options subject to technical review of the matte coating system. Color matching is confirmed against customer-supplied references before production begins.
In-House Processing Capabilities
All processing is carried out at Everesteel’s Jiangyin facility by our own production team. Orders can be supplied as full coils or processed to the required format before shipment, reducing handling requirements at the buyer’s facility.
Slitting
Master coils are slit to specified widths to match your board dimensions. Custom narrow widths are available with a clean edge finish and tight tolerance control, helping minimize offcuts during production.
Cut-to-Length
Coils can be cut to sheet format at specified lengths before dispatch. Sheets are stacked, protected with film, and palletized for export — ready for your lamination or framing line.
Protective Film Application
Clear or blue protective film is applied to the chalk-receptive surface before dispatch. The film protects the matte coating during transit, handling, and fabrication. Specify film type at time of order.
Tension Leveling
All Chalkboard Steel is tension leveled before dispatch to improve flatness. This is a critical quality requirement for framed board fabrication, where bowed or uneven steel can create fit and finish problems during assembly.
Accessories Consolidation
Aluminum frames, ABS corners, lamination adhesive, and aluminum pen trays can be supplied in the same shipment, consolidating procurement into a single order and reducing logistics overhead for chalkboard manufacturers.

FAQs
Q1. What is the minimum order quantity for Chalkboard Steel?
MOQ is 2 tons or 500 sheets per specification. Orders covering multiple specifications — for example, two color options or a combination of Super Matte and Semi-Matte surface — are calculated per line item. Contact our sales team to discuss consolidation options for initial trial orders.
Q2. Can Everesteel supply cut-to-length sheet rather than coil?
Yes. Cut-to-length processing is handled in-house at the Jiangyin facility. Provide your target length and width at inquiry, and the team will confirm feasibility and pricing. Sheets are stacked, film-protected, and palletized for export before dispatch.
Q3. Is the surface compatible with liquid chalk markers as well as traditional chalk?
Yes. The matte coating is engineered to be compatible with both traditional chalk and liquid chalk markers. For liquid chalk markers, Everesteel recommends testing a small area for ghosting performance before full production use, as ghosting behavior can vary depending on marker brand and pigment type.
Q4. What makes Chalkboard Steel different from standard matte-painted steel?
The distinction lies in the surface micro-texture and coating specification. Standard matte-painted steel typically has a surface that is too smooth for chalk to grip effectively. Chalkboard Steel uses a specialized matte polyester/epoxy resin formulation with a controlled micro-texture that allows chalk to leave a clear mark and be fully erased — without the chalk simply sliding across the surface. The ≥5H hardness rating further differentiates it from decorative matte finishes not designed for abrasive writing use.
Q5. Is the surface magnetic?
Yes. Magnetic receptivity is provided by the galvanized steel substrate. In most standard chalkboard constructions, no separate magnetic layer or backing is required. This is one of the key material advantages of Chalkboard Steel over painted MDF and glass writing surfaces, which require an additional magnetic component to provide the same functionality.
Q6. Can Everesteel supply accessories alongside the steel?
Yes. Aluminum frames, ABS corner pieces, adhesive for board lamination, and aluminum pen trays can all be supplied and consolidated into the same shipment. Combining accessories with the steel order reduces logistics complexity and total lead time.
Q7. What documentation is provided with each shipment?
Standard documentation includes a packing list, commercial invoice, bill of lading, and material test report (MTR). Certificate of origin, inspection reports, RoHS-related documentation, and other documents required for customs clearance or L/C compliance are available on request.
